What a Crock!

November 4, 2011

Rumor has it that moms like crock pots. I have had a crock pot for 6.5 years (got one for our wedding) and I used it once to heat an alcoholic apple cider I once made. I decided it was time to dust the guy off and give him a whirl.

In addition to my wonderful crock pot, someone gave me this recipe at one of my showers (probably with the crock pot). I do not know who, so I’m terribly sorry for not giving credit where credit is due.

Sloppy Joes
Recipe type: Entree
Prep time:
Cook time:
Total time:
Serves: 6 to 8

Ingredients
  • 2 lbs. ground beef (I made it with ground turkey)
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • ¼ cup barbecue sauce
  • 1 medium sweet green pepper
  • 2 stalks celery
  • 2 Tbs. brown sugar
  • 2 Tbs. Dijon mustard
  • 3 Tbs. apple cider vinegar
  • 2 Tbs. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 Tbs. chili powder
  • 10 hamburger buns
Instructions
  1. In a large skillet cook ground beef, onion and garlic until meat is brown and onion is tender. Drain fat. In a 2-1/2 to 4 qt. crock pot, combine ketchup, bbq sauce, green pepper, celery, brown sugar, mustard, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce and chili powder. Stir in meat mixture. Cover and cook on low heat setting for 6 to 8 hours, or on high setting for 3 to 4 hours. Spoon into hamburger buns

These were outstanding! Adam and I couldn’t stop eating them. Each bite was like a party on our tongues! Unfortunately Gabby, who was the reason I looked for this recipe, took two bites and threw the rest on the floor. She refused anymore. Drew ate a little more than that but it did not become his favorite food either. It was so delicious, and low-fat which is a major plus, that I’m willing to try and force feed my children this again.

As for my crock pot experience, AMAZING! This winter is going to be full of crock potting, which is sooooooo not a crock! Only problem is the 8 hour simmer time for someone that doesn’t have a ton of time to plan ahead.

All in all, I highly recommend this!
