Help Wanted

October 26, 2011

I have not been quiet about how amazing my husband is (re: Adam’s Spell). In addition to his endless patience with me and my craziness, he is good at so many things! He honestly is the best dad a kid could ever ask for. He is excellent tech support. He has the best sense of humor of anyone I know, after me of course. His attributes are endless. He has one minor, well not so minor, weakness…

He’s not exactly the most handy guy around. And although handiness is a nice quality, it hasn’t really hindered his success thus far. Unless you look closely at some of our pictures hanging, there may have been several holes in the wall to get them to properly hang. And then there was the safety gate issue of 2009. Emergency calls had to be made to our neighbor in order to get those darn gates to stay in the wall.

With the purchase of this new house, there’s quite a lot of work that needs to be done. Some of the larger projects we are hiring experts to handle. But there are a lot of jobs that Adam not only is willing to do himself but downright excited to do. We have been watching DIY and HGTV around the clock. There have been times I have to gently remind him that certain projects are out of his league. Now that we are getting closer to action time, I’m having some larger concerns.

For one, there aren’t any smoke detectors in our new house. Adam feels that this is an “easy” job for him to handle. I need not tell you the relevance of having properly working smoke detectors. Recently Adam had to change the battery of one of our current smoke detectors. I’m not sure we can call this success…

For the most part he hasn’t needed to do any larger jobs, nor been allowed to. So I can mostly gauge his abilities based on smaller jobs. Given that, the childproofed cabinet locks are pretty much
NOT childproof. In addition to splitting the wood of our cabinets, our 16 month old can open the cabinets without any trouble.

It’s not really fair to say that Adam can’t successfully handle a project around the house, he did install some beautiful light fixtures in the kitchen.

I’m just not sure if I would stand directly under his handiwork.

At this point from a financial perspective, as well as a stubbornness on his part, Adam is going to have to complete some of these jobs. That being said, it may get ugly…really ugly. And I just don’t know how to prepare us all for what is to come. So I’m programming 911 in my phone and looking to our handy friends and family to standby. Accepting volunteers now, apply here 🙂
