“Mommy!!! You never have time for us!” As if!!!! Gabby, that line might have worked when I was working and overcome with guilt but now all I do is live, eat and breathe you crazies!!!!
Where do kids come up with this stuff? I sometimes feel like my kids are reading a manual, “How to Hit Mom Exactly Where It Hurts.” I’m certain that’s where a line like, “I hate you, you are the worst mom in the universe” came from! It’s certainly not because I say that kind of hurtful slander to them, or worse to my own mom who I believe is the opposite of that statement (the best mom in the universe). How does such a cute and innocent-looking little person come up with such things otherwise???!!!
Parenting has definitely taught me that you have to have tough skin and let some things roll off. I’m completely guilty of over-reacting, or rather matching their hysteria with an equal amount of my own, and that does absolutely nothing to diffuse the situation. So instead I have to muster up the energy to calmly explain to Gabby that my adult only excursion would not interest her. Since she would like to spend time with me, we can find another time to do something she would like to do – you know, like every second of my life where it is ALL about her or her two brothers.
It’s hard for an almost four and six year old to understand that you have to choose your words wisely. Once those harsh words are out there, you can’t take them back. I certainly have been guilty of saying inappropriate things and I’m much older. I guess we’ll all have to learn that lesson the hard way.
