Break Redefined

November 26, 2013

What do you mean there’s no school all week? What am I supposed to do with my kids without any programming??? Ah!!!!!!

Some day, hopefully in the not too distant future, it will be a benefit that my kids are close in age. Their abilities and interests matching each other’s. Today, however, that is not the case.

Activities that once only interested Drew are broadening to include Gabby. In the beginning of life with three that was enough to warrant an outing. Now, though, I have to keep Noah in mind. He no longer quietly goes along for the ride, which adds an element of juggling that makes everything seem impossible.

A day at home ends up being full of electronics which I hate or fighting about the fact that we are not using electronics which I also hate. Each child has a completely separate idea for what playing with toys looks like. For Drew that’s playing basketball, hockey or football. For Gabby that’s dolls, babies and costumes. For Noah that’s crawling around the house and putting everything into his mouth. And none, I repeat NONE, can overlap to be a group activity!!!

Play dates have evolved to mean that either I have another child to juggle or I am constantly negotiating peace agreements when the play date goes awry. My kids are not gracious hosts, generous toy sharers or considerate friends. We’re working on all that. At times that makes the art of play date WAY worse that just “playing” with all three myself!

All week without any plans?!?! I can hardly wait for winter break…
