You Go GF!!

May 3, 2012

Did you hear the news? It’s incredible really. She did it! People joked that she has spent as long as 72 months being pregnant, and Jessica Simpson FINALLY had her baby.

I am just as guilty as anyone. I criticized her…physique. Jessica Simpson became known for her sultry beauty. Once glamorized as Daisy in the Dukes of Hazard (most known for her car washing scene) and then criticized for rocking “mom jeans,” she has always been noted for many things but mostly her beauty. And she is beautiful.

But she’s also a woman. As most of us know, to be a woman is to battle the bulge. Pregnancy is no exception to this. Some women embrace that pregnancy could be an excuse to have an all access pass to eat whatever they want. Some other women have spent their lives watching the scale like a hawk, that it’s almost impossible to embrace their growing size and therefore are very cautious with their consumption. And as long as the baby receives all of its nutrients and the mother is healthy, I say whatever floats your boat.

Yet I, like a lot of others, watched Jessica Simpson’s growing bod and used every opportunity to judge her. She not only was thrilled to be pregnant, she flaunted herself by posing nude on the cover of Elle magazine. So in some ways you could say she asked for all the beached whale comments. On the other hand, I think she did something so brave.

In a world of stick skinny models, obscene measures to be thin, she showed off her growing body. She flaunted it with pride of the growing baby inside her. And for every girl who looks up to celebrities, that’s an important thing for us to see. Not everyone can be Nicole Kidman who maintains her obscenely thin physique while pregnant. And to have celebrities look like that while pregnant, is an unrealistic expectation to put on pregnant women.

The fact is that women are supposed to gain weight while they are incubating a growing fetus. Some women do that while maintaining their normal look. Others get swollen and look less than best. Should women have to hibernate, avoid media and feel disgraced? Absolutely not. Rather they should wear it proud like Jessica Simpson…just maybe not nude on the cover of a magazine.
