I’m calling off birthdays!!!!!!!

May 4, 2012

This last week was spent full of birthday celebrations. Adam’s birthday makes a Polish wedding look like a short celebration. And although I’m grateful to put this eating out to an end, its been a ton of fun despite one minor (well major issue).

All year long, Drew celebrates a variety of different people’s birthdays. Whenever we start discussing the order of birthdays, it always comes up that after DaDa’s birthday comes Drew’s birthday. Adult translation is that shortly after the END of his dad’s birthday, we will start gearing up for the 4 year old’s birthday. Child translation is that it should FINALLY be his birthday.

At any mention of Adam’s birthday, Drew would cry and carry on about how nobody is celebrating his birthday and it should be his. Drew experienced some of these feelings when it was my birthday in December but this time it was multiplied. It felt in some ways that it was overshadowing the excitement of Adam’s birthday because of this behavior. The actual day of Adam’s birthday was wrapped around everything that would make Drew and Gabby happy – an outing to the children’s museum. What more could we have possibly done other than forgo Adam’s birthday and handed it over to Drew?

I tried explaining to Adam, really myself, that its the same as his sportsmanship. None of us like losing a game. All of us wish our birthday could be everyday. We all get passed it because we are mature enough to know that winning is sweeter if we earn it and birthdays are better when they are only once a year. That level of comprehension is beyond the capacity at which Drew is capable.

It doesn’t change the circumstance. Every time he whined about how it should be his day instead of his “always patient,” “constantly dedicated” father’s, I wanted to call off June 12. So the 3 and 11/12th year old gets his way and we are on our road to celebrating his fourth. What’s gonna happen when June 12 comes and goes and June 26, Gabby’s birthday, comes? Lookout world…its gonna be a LONG year until June 12 again!
