Calling all wigglebottoms

November 16, 2011

Through countless behavioral challenges, we have depended on books to guide us through the tough spots. When a new sibling came, we went straight to books to help prepare Drew. With all this talk of moving, books have helped to articulate all the things we wanted to tell Drew but struggled to find ways to make it 3 year old appropriate.

I was recently exposed to a new character, Howard B. Wigglebottom. First of all, who couldn’t love this character with a last name like Wigglebottom?!?! There are a series of books all with Howard, an adorable rabbit, being the lovable main character. We, of course, opted for “Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns to Listen.”

This book discusses a variety of circumstances where Howard does not listen, and the repercussions he suffers from not listening. In the end, he changes his ways (hope this doesn’t ruin the end for you) and the benefits he reaps from listening. It’s a cute story that both of my kids enjoyed. The best part for me was that it was a really easy, clear cut teaching moment. I have been bringing up Howard to Drew repeatedly. I remind him of how things really got better for Howard once he started listening.

The series deals with a variety of issues from bullying to following your heart and feeling the need to conform. Some of those stories are a little more mature than the current place my three year old is at but I feel like laying down the ground work now is a good decision.

The website is very interactive with a lot of resources too. For those of us that feel at times like we are floundering with this whole parenting thing, it’s a really good resource.

I highly suggest you get to know Howard B. Wigglebottom, so that your little wigglebottoms have a way to learn good lessons through a cute little character like Howard.

  1. Hi Heli,

I just wanted to let you know that I started reading some of your blog posts when they pop up in my newsfeed. I absolutely love reading mommy blogs (especially of another SAHM!) b/c I feel like I always learn something helpful and it’s nice to know there are other moms like me out there. Your posts seem very honest and funny and I just wanted you to know I appreciate that. A few of my friends’ blogs seem incredibly self-centered so it’s refreshing to read one that absolutely does not. Keep up the integrity and honesty in your posts. Nice job! Hope the move goes well.

    • Hi Jen,

Thank you so much for your kind words. It is difficult at times to put yourself out there. I feel like I’m talking to no one or everyone is judging me. It’s great feedback like this that propels me to continue writing. Words cannot express my gratitude. I wish you well with your son and look forward to hearing your thoughts on some of the subject matter 🙂

      Thanks again!!
      Heli

  2. Hi Heli. Congratulations on your closing. I know it will be a very good new chapter in your lives. Be sure to stock the new house with plenty of dental floss for you know who.
    Love, Poppy
