The Legacy of Neurosis

March 9, 2011

Over the weekend Drew had a birthday party at a kiddie swimming pool. He was so excited, went running in and fell. He struggled to get up, couldn’t get his head above the water and I almost had a heart attack. I screamed until someone picked him up. It was probably a five second trauma but it left me shaking like a leaf and remembering how careful you always have to be with children.

Recently on the news, a young teenage athlete scored the winning basket to the game and dropped dead on the court immediately after. How is it that Drew was lucky on Saturday and that same boy was not days before? Without starting a whole discussion on higher powers and whatnot, how do you keep your children safe?

A couple years ago a daycare provider in the area threw a baby onto the floor, killing the baby. Parents spend months researching different daycare facilities. In most cases, there is no way for a parent to interview every person that interacts with their children when you are using a center. How was that parent to know that there was someone mentally unstable in the facility?

As an adolescent I was frequently frustrated with my mother and grandmother for their neurosis. Since I have become a parent, I’ve become crippled by the same craziness. Bad things happen to good people, how do you prevent them from happening to you? I can’t keep my children in a bubble of protection, nor do I really want to. I’ve often thought when my children are being vaccinated that I would like a vaccination for a long, healthy, safe, happy life. How do you live your life with faith that everything will be well when you hear stories like these? How do you have confidence that your children will be safe from harm’s way? How do you keep these concerns from paralyzing you? I try to push out the negative thoughts each and every day but sometimes I fall off the wagon. If you think positive thoughts, can you will your children healthy and safe? I guess that’s all I can do…
