It’s about rights

January 26, 2012

So I’ve definitely shown my true colors by explaining my feelings about the Kardashians. I think they are unbelievably beautiful, nice to look at, and oddly entertaining. That all being said, I have felt very slighted by Kim’s marriage. Not that I expected it to be more than your average celebrity marriage. And definitely not that they owe me anything in their marriage. It’s just that it seemed like such a fraud. So it started me thinking about who should and who should not be entitled the opportunity to get married.

For all of those people who say that gay marriage undermines the sanctity of marriage, I have one thing to say to you – KARDASHIAN! How in a world where a marriage can bring in 17.9 million dollars of revenue, how in a world where that same marriage lasted only 72 days, how does someone have the right to say gay people are less than a heterosexual couple and do not deserve the same rights?!?!? I feel so outraged by that concept that I can’t even open my mind or ears to the concept that anyone could have a deferring opinion. Perhaps that makes me no better than the opposing argument but it is just incomprehensible to me.

On the heals of MLK Day, it seems so clear to me that we are discussing a basic right. A right between two human beings. We are not talking about barn animals, we are not talking about inanimant objects – all of which I have heard gay marriage compared to. We are talking about two tax paying (ok I’m making an assumption here), human beings with blood in their veins, legal adults who decide that they want to live their lives together.

How can a whole society be frauded into not only believing Kris Humphries and Kim Kardashian wed but are continuously following this story via television, magazine and internet? And this same society does not allow some of their citizens to wed because of the risk this poses to the sanctity of marriage. My brain just can’t wrap around the concept. Please enlighten me.
