In 2006, Heli invited me to join her on a little race in my neighborhood (the Bucktown 5k.) A 5k is 3.1 miles. As a self defined couch potato, this seemed like a feat akin to climbing Mt. Everest.
Nonetheless, I did it (slowly). I walked, I ran. I ran, I walked. I carbo loaded, even though its not really called for when you only run 2.5 miles at a time.
I was hooked.
The next year, I ran a half marathon. And then another. And some more.
I threw in a marathon in 2010.
Countless 5ks, 8ks, 10ks, 9 half marathons, and one full, running season has begun once again.
I am training for my 2nd Full Marathon (and some other races on the way.)
I love running because it inspires me. It inspires me to be a better me-maybe to run better, or faster. Running is time for me, to be alone in my thoughts, or with my music. Running is time with friends. Running can be what I want it to be.
I am proud to say I am a runner.
This year, I will be running the marathon to raise money for Misericordia, a home for children and adults with developmental delays. It is a cause near and dear to my heart.
In the next few months, I will be sharing “A Runners Two Cents” from time to time. Can’t wait to share the journey with you!
